I Bleed Butterbeer: Homophobia: The fear that another man will treat you like you treat women. ›
We were discussing homosexuality because of an allusion to it in the book we were reading, and several boys made comments such as, “That’s disgusting.” We got into the debate and eventually a boy admitted that he was terrified/disgusted when he was once sharing a taxi and the other male…
Art’s great nudes have gone skinny
Italian artist Anna Utopia Giordano has created a visual re-imagination of historic nude paintings, had the subjects conformed their bodies to what the 21st century considers an ideal of beauty. The results are revealing—and quite shocking in what they say about the modern attitude toward women’s bodies.
Does anyone actually find the thinner ones better looking? I am trying to ask myself if I don’t because I’m used to the more famous, voluptuous ones, or if I don’t because it really is less attractive. I think it’s the latter, actually. Especially the VDM.
(Please carefully note: the thinner ones here are not conforming to healthy modern standards, just modern ones. I absolutely will not brook “you are being mean to thin girls.” Most of these show too-thin, especially the bottom right. Maybe the right one second from the bottom is in a more healthy range. But most of these are, well, skating the line, which is the point of the image.)
(And even if it WASN’T, my opinion is just that… my opinion. I am allowed to find the very thin ones less attractive than the voluptuous ones. Please note, before you go on a RARRRGH THIN GIRLS ARE REAL GIRLS TOO rant, that I agree with you, but that doesn’t at ALL mean I am not entitled to find one thing less attractive than the other. The problem with our society is NOT that some people find thicker girls unattractive - that is still their absolute RIGHT to do, the way they might like a redhead or a blonde or whatever. The problem is when society equates that thickness to negativity and general badness: to when it encourages us to conform our opinion to some flat dynamic because it’s what sells clothes. I won’t ever begrudge someone their opinion to prefer thin girls. I *will* begrudge them their opinion to think that all girls should be thin. There is a HUGE difference. The kneejerk “BUT THIN GIRLS ARE PEOPLE TOO!” is useless here: you are preaching to the choir. It’s very dangerous to shift from the real issue and cause a fuss, because it makes fusses that should matter less important than they are.)
